Installation and Setup Issues

Note:

Your Microsoft keyboard and mouse will work with basic functionality prior to installing the IntelliType Pro and IntelliPoint software. Installing the software is required for full functionality.

When you install the software, the 'unable to install a required component' message appears

When you install the IntelliType Pro software, you may receive a message saying that Setup was unable to install a required component. If Setup is unable to install the following components, follow the relevant instructions:

• MSXML. On the installation CD, go to the PrereqMSXML folder, open the folder for your processor type (32-bit or 64-bit), and then run the MSI file.
• The MSXML update patch. On the installation CD, go to the PrereqMSXML folder, open the folder for your processor type (32-bit or 64-bit), and then run the EXE file.
• Windows Application Error Reporting. On the installation CD, go to the PrereqWatson folder, open the folder for your processor type (32-bit or 64-bit), and then run the MSI file.
• Windows Installer. On the installation CD, go to the PrereqWindowsInstaller3.1v2x86 folder, and then run the EXE file.

Troubleshooting: Installation

I logged on as a guest during Setup and received an installation error

Hardware Configuration Issues

The keyboard does not appear in Devices and Printers in Windows 7

If you connect a keyboard using a switch box, the keyboard might not be displayed in Devices and Printers in Windows 7.

Try plugging the keyboard directly into the computer.

Documentation Issues

Opening LegalInformation.chm causes an error

Microsoft IntelliType is the brand driver for Microsoft's series of computer keyboards. IntelliType supports all known Microsoft keyboards (including those that are shipped as parts of desktop sets, as well as entertainment keyboards – i.e. those that are intended for Media center). Limitations[edit]

While the user could always define special keys (and multimedia keys, if such exist), it was only possible since version 6.3 to define them not just globally but also per application.

Version 6.2 forced the user to constantly check for updates by installing and launching the file 'dpupdchk.exe' in the background. It must stay in the background for the control panel's settings to launch (although it could be avoided by renaming the file to something else). Version 6.3 fixed this behavior by only making it an opt-in option during the installation.

Version 7.0 and later in Windows 7 64-bit has recently been proven to disable the media keys (Play/Pause, Next, Previous, Stop) for third-party media players such as iTunes and Media Jukebox when they are not the primary window of focus.^[6] Some workaround exists:^[7] This behavior continues to be an issue as of Version 8.
